How to Build Your Personal Brand on Instagram

How to Build Your Personal Brand on Instagram

Disclaimer: This is a post for people who want to build a personal brand on Instagram for career purposes and not for people who enjoy posting on Instagram for fun!

For someone who’s all things digital marketing, I can’t emphasize how important creating a personal brand is. Creating a personal brand for yourself establishes you as a natural leader and works wonders for career success, allowing individuals to pursue whatever it is they’re passionate about. While you may be working a 9-5 job at a software or consulting firm everyday for the sake of establishing a solid career path, your passion could lie in photography, dance, fashion, traveling, makeup etc. And the best way to turn this passion into a possible future career is to expand on your personal brand. The mutual relationship between career success and personal branding is a truly unique dynamic that has the potential to launch a person to new heights. In today’s generation, we’re fortunate to have platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to shape our personal brand.

Social media marketing is one of the most popular and profitable strategies today—more than 84% of marketers are either keeping or increasing their social media budgets moving forward. But today I’m here to talk about how to create buzz regarding your personal brand on social media FOR FREE.

The most demanding platform of social media is Instagram. With over 400 million monthly active users, it’s become a super popular platform in relatively short time. When you look past the initial learning curve, Instagram posts aren’t intimidating or intensive. In fact, I can teach you some of the ingredients to creating a “perfect” Instagram for your personal brand. READY?

Step One: Building a Content Theme

The goal of my Instagram is to establish myself as a digital influencer to build up my personal brand in the digital marketing space. By researching other digital influencers, I’ve learned that the type of posts that most digital influencers post fall under 4 categories: fashion, fitness, travel, and passion—which under a bigger umbrella is called Lifestyle. By establishing that these are the categories I want to post in, it makes it easier for me to create and deliver content.

So research on what kind of Instagram you’re trying to make—dance centered? Makeup centered? And do some research to figure out your main content buckets.

Step Two: Engage, Engage, Engage

Engaging with others on Instagram is SO important. The more you engage with other, in some meaningful, connective way, the more influence your brand will hold and more actions your users will take. So in my case, I have a list of hashtags that I like to look up daily on Instagram (ex. #fashionblogger, #traveldiaries, #lifestyle). I try to like and comment on at least 30-40 posts a day that relate to my above buckets. This is how I can find like-minded people with the same passion!

Fun Fact: This has led to some awesome fashion collaborations I have coming up next month!

Step Three: Consistency

This step is the hardest for me personally because having enough good content to post is a struggle. I advise not posting anything for the sake of wanting to post something on Instagram because there’s a huge difference between content and GOOD content. What I’ve noticed from successful brands on Instagram is they generally post 1-2 times a week—they also plan their content a month in advance!

Step Four: Analytics (Optional)

This step is crucial for digital marketers because the biggest question I ask myself is: Am I creating an impact with my content? I use tools like SimplyMeasured and InstaFollow to measure my KPI’s, track my follower engagement rates, analyze which posts receive the best traffic, and understand which hashtags are working for me.

Instagram is the most valuable platform to emerge from brands. If you know what makes an Instagram post successful for your personal brand, you can build and maintain a strategy that will earn you tons of followers, and most importantly, increase the value of your personal brand. At the end of the day, whether you post on Instagram for fun or for branding purposes or both, it never hurts to put yourself out there, meet new people, and garner a few more likes.
